Description
1.) Identity Development in Adolescence
James Marcia extended Erikson's work on identity crisis with the concepts of identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, identity moratorium, and identity achievement.
To complete this discussion, apply one or more of these concepts to an area of life challenge, such as choosing a college major or career, or participating in significant relationships.
o Describe the life challenge.
o Describe one or more of Marcia's concepts.
? How does this concept explain or apply to the life challenge?
? How is culture or ethnicity important to adolescent identity development?
? Does culture and ethnicity have an effect on this area of life challenge?
In addition, in your post:
o Either: Refer to and integrate ideas presented in the text and supplemental information. Cite the textbook or other unit resources at least twice within your discussion.
o Or: Cite at least one scholarly resource from the Capella library to support your discussion. Do not use popular media sources such as Wikipedia or About.com.
2.) Cognitive Development in Adolescence
A great deal of current research focuses on understanding adolescent cognitive development and driving behaviors. Teenagers, ages 16 to 19, have the highest vehicle accident rates of any age group (State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles, 2011), and car crashes are the leading cause of adolescent deaths (CDC, 2010).
For this discussion, respond to the following prompts:
o What are some sociocultural and cognitive factors, besides lack of skill, that may play a role in teenagers' risk-taking while driving? Be sure to read the articles before responding.
o What factors contribute to an adolescent's readiness to drive?
o What are your recommendations, based on what you have learned (and your own observations), for an age when teenagers should be legally allowed to drive?
Support your statements and recommendations with concepts from developmental theory and information from scholarly or other professional sources.

Question 1: Identity Development in Adolescence
James Marcia addressed Erikson’s concept of identity crisis by postulating that the stage
of adolescence neither comprises of identity confusion nor identity determination, but the level to
which a person has explored and devoted in various life domains such relationship choices,
religion, sexual roles, vocation, and so on (Berk, 2018). The theory of identity achievement
developed by Marcia argues that crisis and commitment are the two distinct concepts that form
the identity of an adolescent. The crisis is a period of confusion where choices or deep-rooted
values are being reconsidered (Berk, 2018). The result of crisis results is a commitment made to
a certain value or role.
Choosing a career is a process that requires planning and self-reflection because the
decision one makes may have lifetime ramifications; for instance, opportunities for success,
status within community, and identity and sense of self-worth. Marcia posited four stages related
to adolescent identity. Identity achievement is the statues in which a teenager has experienced an
identity crisis and has resolved a commitment to identity, i.e., a specific value or role one has
chosen (Berk, 2018).
Identity achievement is Marcia’s concept that allows a person to make a career choice.
An adolescent makes a career choice after going through a crisis to make a commitment to a
particular identity that matches his or her interests. Choosing a career requires one to assess self
since each person has different talents, goals, interest, and values. A person is likely to excel and
be satisfied in certain careers than others. Determining the best career involves conducting
careers assessments, getting career counseling, and conducting comprehensive self-evaluation.
The personal assessment is followed by making a list of potential careers and obtaining required
career training. An adolescent will choose a career after reflecting and processing questions

related to skills, interest, and values as well as after understanding what he or she wants. Such an
adolescent has made a commitment to a specific career and has come to grips with certain values
and roles.
Culture and ethnicity are learned and socially shared, and therefore, they influence all
elements of an individual’s life. Sexual expressions, social responsibilities, and belief systems
vary according to culture (Berk, 2018). Factors that shape the adolescent growth identity vary by
culture. For example, the extent to which a teenage is perceived as independent or autonomous
varies in diverse cultures as well as the behaviors that depict emerging independence.
Adolescents develop distinct belief system through their connections with familial, social, and
cultural environments. These belief systems, in turn, influence work ethics, gender roles, ...
