Emergency Management Agencies usually play a significant role in responding to
hazards whenever they arise. They usually provide various services to the victims of the disaster,
such as providing them with medical services, food, shelter, and temporary housing before
repairing the destroying structures. The agencies vary depending on the role that they play in a
nation and their region. Some of the agencies involves are non-governmental organizations,
private institutions, firefighting agencies, and various levels of government, among others. The
role of emergency management agency has been evidenced in multiple situations, especially
during the 1900 Galveston flood, 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, and Fires, as well as the 1918
Great Influenza Pandemic.
1900 Galveston Flood
Incident
The Galveston hurricane took place on 8th September 1900. It was considered as the most
deadly disastrous incident that has ever occurred in the history of America. The number of
fatalities that the hurricane left behind is considered to range from 6,000 to 12,000 in the US
(Simpson & Garstan, 2013). However, according to the official report, the deaths that were
recorded are 8,000, where most of them were evidenced in Texas around Galveston. Besides
killing thousands of people, the floods destroyed more than 7,000 buildings with the inclusion of
more than 3,000 homes. Within Galveston city, no dwelling place was left undamaged. More
than 10,000 residents out of almost 38,000 people within the town were left without a ...
