Mississippi Man Sentenced for Stolen Identity Tax Refund Fraud
On Sept. 25, 2014, in Jackson, Mississippi, Tony Jones, of Jackson, was sentenced to 105 months in prison, three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $222,137 in restitution. Jones previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States. According to court documents, the conspiracy involved stealing names and social security numbers of individuals and filing fraudulent federal tax returns for the purpose of obtaining fraudulent refunds. The refunds were electronically deposited into various bank accounts in Mississippi belonging to Jones and his co-conspirators.
