An intake interview is the interactions that the client and the patient have when they are
seeking for help (Sommers-Flanagan & Sommers-Flanagan, 2012). Therefore, for a new human
service worker, it is essential to train them on how the intake and assessment process works in a
given correctional facility. Additionally, it is vital to know the kind of people they will deal with
and the help that their clients require. The purpose of the intake interview is simply the
introduction of the worker to the patient and to cover what they expect during an interview.
Through the intake interview, the human service worker can establish and diagnose the
problems that the client may be suffering from (Sommers-Flanagan & Sommers-Flanagan,
2012). Further, it goes ahead to examine the mental status of an individual so that one can devise
the best way to deal with a person. In a correctional facility, different people may have various
problems that require unrelated diagnoses and treatment, and that can only be noted during the
intake interview. Some cases may be too complicated that needed more help from external
sources, and in case they identify a client require such support, they should make a referral to
another source.
