Education for Sustainable Development: Global Action Plan (GAP)
Introduction
In the world today, resources are slowly and steadily becoming shorter in supply courtesy
of the rapidly growing global population. Soon, most people will not have the opportunity to
enjoy clean water or fresh vegetables. For this reason, it is imperative that the current generation,
together with prospective ones, learn the methods by which to live, which guarantee the safety of
resources for the benefit of the future. Education for sustainable development (ESD) is a strategy
aimed at training, educating people while coming up with maintainable means of living that will
directly and positively impact the environment for a safer and better future. UNESCO initiated
the Global Actions Plan (GAP) mainly after the realization that without education, the
sustainable developments goals would be unachievable (UNESCO, 2019). Generally, it aims at
enhancing the quality of education all around the world. It operates under two objectives. Firstly,
to reorganize learning criteria for the sole purpose of ensuring that every global citizen can
access primary education and training, enough to guarantee him or her a sustainable tomorrow.
Secondly, GAP works by reinforcing all potential educational programs whose aim is to promote
developments that will benefit both present and future generations (UNESCO, 2019).
