Exploring significant people in nursing history
Nurses have been playing important roles in the medical field with little recognition as
opposed to their colleagues the physicians. Nonetheless, they have not only cared for patients
suffering from different ailments but also undertaken social activism, cultivated educational
reforms, and bravely participated in wars. Two respectable figures in the nursing history
worth exploring are Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton.

Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy in 12th May 1820. Despite her parents’
opposition, Nightingale started working as a volunteer in hospitals in Italy, Germany, and
France. Nightingale is essential in nursing history for integrating statistical methods to solve
nursing challenges. During the Crimean war, Nightingale went to take care of soldiers in the
British military camp. While there, she observed the dirty environment of the care facilities
and used her mathematical knowledge to study the mortality rate in the setting. Her statistics
established that about 600 of 1000 soldiers died due to the lack of hygiene, infectious and
communicable diseases. She formulated and hygiene intervention, including maintaining a
