The Jazz Age
In the 1920s, Jazz music became part of popular music. The cause was the introduction of
part of the African American culture to the white Americans in the middle class. The jazz age in
the roaring twenties was like a movement. The effect was that during this period, new styles of
music and dancing came up. This age was attributed to the African Americans who introduced
new techniques in music along with their indigenous African culture.
Several jazz musicians fled New Orleans and moved to other cities in the north such as
Chicago and New York during the World War I. This migration resulted in the creation of
different styles of music and culture. Jazz became quickly became popular because it was played
in illegal nightclubs and speakeasies. These places sold alcohol when it was prohibited. The
popularity of jazz was accompanied with a cultural shift in the American people. Jazz grew
popular really fast. Some of the rising stars of jazz music at that time included: Duke Ellington,
Chick Webb and Cab Calloway. The famous venues during that time were cotton Club and the
Apollo Theatre.
