Global Water Scarcity
Introduction
Water is one of the key resources to global sustainable development and a basic of life
and livelihoods. Despite being an essential aspect of life, water is increasingly becoming a
societal and geopolitical problem. In some world region, water has already become a pressing
national concern where the ecosystem is unable to provide fresh water to its occupants. Water is
perceived as a human right and an environmental good for supporting the ultimate quality of life
on earth. In this sense, there is the need to effectively manage water resources by tackling
neglected issues such as wastage of waters, corruption in the water sector and unethical practices
among other problems affecting the water sector. This discussion brings into light the severity of
water shortage, and how the shortage is linked to global crises and conflict.
Causes of Global Water Scarcity
Water shortage is caused by pollution that degrades the quality of water. This form of
pollution reduces the quantity of available water and makes it unfit for human consumption. Soul
depletion by agricultural methods such as fertilizers and pesticides are harmful to the available
water sources, thus, making it unfit for use and the cause of waterborne diseases. Water shortage
is also liked to the overuse and depletion of the available sources (Ohlsson, 2017). The water
resources become misused by the increasing needs of the water causing scarcity. Inadequate
management of water resources is linked to water shortage. Some of the water used for
agricultural purposes is also mismanaged. Industrial activities and domestic usage contributes to
wastages meaning that much water is being wasted that ever before because of the rise of
industries and the increasing human population. Climate change as an existing issue is another

major cause of water shortage because of global warming issues. Global warming affects the
rainfall patterns in some areas leading to the emergence of drought, heat waves and floods (Jury
& Vaux, 2017). In some areas, glaciers and ice perks are down and this condition affects the
supply of fresh water. Generally, climate change is increasing global water shortages particularly
in areas already experiencing the water shortage.
