OVERALL COMMENTS
Hi Bryan,
Again, this submission better addresses the requirements of the assessment and it's clear you've put a lot of work
into it. You've only identified 2 sources - remember that you need to include multiple. And I know you got other
information in your paper from sources - make sure you include those. I'm also not sure what makes this a public
information piece. Remember to use one of the required formats outlined in the assessment instructions. This
assessment should be written for a specific audience. Finally, there are many grammatical errors and wrong words so this piece is difficult to read. I'm going to add another attempt so you can focus on the first criteria (public
information piece) as well as the grammatical errors. You will need to work with the writing center and your tutor to
address these issues.

Hi Bryan,
This is a much better assessment and I appreciate that you've organized it around the criterion. I still do not see,
however, a discussion of a SPECIFIC popular news media article and how that article portrays the minority group or
how that specific media piece may be influenced by power. There also continue to be regular grammatical errors
which make this assessment difficult to read. I will add one more attempt but this will be your final attempt. I strongly
encourage you to work with a tutor on your remaining assessments.

MEDIA RACISM
Media Racism
Summarize the main events or issues presented in the article
Racism is an act of discriminating someone of a different race based on the belief or
assumption that one race is superior to the other. Today, there are many cases in the media where
racism is portrayed (Deggans, 2014). Racial bias has become something evident in news media
platforms. The more significant issue is how different media platform wants to frame narratives
of racism in their stories. Media platforms have moved to the level where the story or
information is presented in a way that fits with the audience and how they view the whole issue
of racism. Brooklyn Institute conducted a study in 2011 and asserted that 46% of the American
population believes that racial discrimination against white people is just as challenging as
against black people (Van Dijk, 2015). However, with time, 70% respondent said that they did
not believe in the data presented by the fox news channel at all. Therefore, the media has also
made it hard to identify the right information on how media platform has become racist.
Comparison
Most of the group that weighs on media discrimination and bias is political group and
activists. Conservatives and liberals are a group of people having a different view of what they
believe in and fight. More so, their values can be baseless if they lack facts and as such under
scrutiny. If the information or data presented requires evidence then the disastrous outcome is
bound to happen (Deggans, 2014). Most of the event such as Brown and Taylor case is
interpreted differently because of the reaction from people. Contrarily, there is always
undercovers challenges such as black crimes because of the response the topic will have on the
black community as well as on the national level. Michael Brown shooting sparked a lot of
reaction in St. Louis. Therefore, Jake Tapper highlights that media critics should always see the
MEDIA RACISM
3
whole issue in that perspective. Thus, in most cases, media choose to be biased depending on
which side they favor. Media bias is something that has been there for a while, and it will take a
lot of effort to erase it. People react differently based on the events, for instance, the shooting at
St. Louis left the minority group frustrated and unhappy; on the other hand, the superior group
became judgmental leading to constant conflict between the two groups.
Consider how your source material demonstrates this dominant/minority group
differentiation. For
The conflict is based on both ethical and racial line. It is like there is a media influence in
the industry. The determinant enables the kind of information to be published to the public.
media also chooses the information that based suits there interest. Based on the article, content
and news are presented according to the viewpoint of the media platform. The minority group is
always disadvantaged and responds by rioting in the street (Deggans, 2014). Media houses go to
the extent of giving wrong information, and most victims end up the prison. Shooting and drugs
have always been tied to blacks in the United States.
In American, there is a high rate of incarcerated blacks in the cells. The media has made
it known that blacks are the root cause of mass shooting in the country as such if blacks are
found lazing around in the streets they are automatically arrested (Haynes, & Ramakrishnan,
2016). Black African men are always portrayed as rough and reckless as such, can cause conflict.
Minority media, on the other hand, has been suppressed and compromised. Media is still
controlled by big companies and administrative personnel who end up controlling the content to
the public. The press ends up circulating information that favors them. Similarly, the black race
suffers as a marginalized community that cannot express themselves.
4
MEDIA RACISM
Discuss at least two sociological theories that are most appropriate to understanding the
diversity issues in
Labeling theory
Labeling theory is an act of how self-identity, as well as the behavior of a person,
determines how a person is described. It related to the stereotyping process. Black race in
America has been stereotyped for being rude and rough. Since the time of slave trade they have
always been treated as a second class in the country as such, nothing good can come out of them.
The whole scenario has made it had to erase the mentally even in the modern age (Haynes, &
Ramakrishnan, 2016). Drugs and mass shooting are always associated with the black
community. Media, on the other hand, seem to hide the real data on how such event evolves.
Press usually protect the actual data of white people engaging in crimes. The theory holds that
deviance is not related to an act but focuses on the majorities’ tendency to label minorities
negatively. It goes to an extent where the justice department is compromised in the course of
making a decision. It is seen as a cultural norm for a specific community to do what they do.
Therefore, media is compromised to think that blacks are naturally deviance and as such, being
biased and racial while designing media content.
Race relation cycle
The theory was founded by Robert Ezra Park from 1864 to 1944. Ezra examined group
relationship and evolution over time. He asserted that when the group first comes into contact
through conquest or immigration they tend to be competitive (Haynes, & Ramakrishnan, 2016).
Competition is universal as human being competes for needs and wants. Race does not require
face to face interaction. When the competing party comes into contact, it becomes personal. For
the case of blacks and whites whom conflict started since the industrial era, resources control is
MEDIA RACISM
5
the basis for the dispute among the group. Other scarce commodities under competition include
maintenance of status. Conflict among the team is costly and distributive and tent to move
towards accommodation and stable relationship (Van Dijk, 2015). Accommodation process takes
different shapes including slavery and other forms of institutionalized discrimination.
Accommodation influences and contributes to a particular social attitude and norms that allow
the two groups to coexist. Accommodation period can take a long time and dissolve into further
conflict. Also, the accommodation period may result in assimilation. Assimilation enables the
minor group to fuse with the other group where they start sharing historical experience and
incorporate them into a mutual culture. Assimilations may not lead to uniformity but rather a
unity of knowledge. As per the current state of the United State, the country is still under
accommodation where people are still fighting over the scarce resource such as maintaining
status. Each community wants to control and manage their status and culture.
Discuss how one or more of Merton's four categories of prejudice and discrimination apply
to the media piece you chose.
There are four categories of prejudice and discrimination according to Merton. Most
media platform in the United States are controlled by big fish as such control the content to be
published and posted (Van Dijk, 2015). As such, media personnel may be unprejudiced
discriminator because they are influenced to announce the news that fits either liberals or
conservative interest. If they do not do what is needed, then they lose their jobs. Further, the
media is categorized as prejudiced nondiscriminatory. These are the type of media that are
swayed by social trends and stereotype. They lack the facts to put across. Example of such
platform stated in the article
6
MEDIA RACISM
Includes fox news channel. Thus, kind of media is not liberal because they are racist as such;
they end up airing baseless content without facts. They do not practice what they believe in. On
the other hand, most media in United Stated do not hide their views and are categorized as
prejudiced and discriminator. They are frankly against minorities’ opinions and activities.
Pluralism
In the article, the media portray the community that has remained divided. Pluralism is a
process where an ethnic group continues to exist culturally distinct from the other group. It is
like the two groups are not willing to amend their differences (Haynes, & Ramakrishnan, 2016).
Both communities remain with their authentic traditions and culture. However, assimilation is a
difference in that the group is united and share the historical experience. Media is seen to
increase the rift between the two groups by not giving the accurate picture of the country’s state
based on racial biases. An ethnic group may share the same language, but they are divided.
Find and analyze two credible sources of data that are appropriate for supporting or
refuting the central Tenets of your chosen media article or program
The stories related to racism in the country are interpreted differently, and the truth about
biases seems to stray away from reality. The stories are framed differently following how the
audience views the whole issue (Haynes, & Ramakrishnan, 2016). As such, the division is there;
however, it is being hidden most media choose to high the fact from the public so that people can
see how United State is. Or rather, how the minorities are bad. Therefore, people hold different
identity while existing in the same country.
Media content influencers
The example is given in the article concerning fox news channel asserting that 40% of
Americans view discrimination against white people as a big problem just as for black people.
7
MEDIA RACISM
There was personal interest regarding the study (Deggans, 2014). The news was biased and close
to 70 percent of the population said that the information was not factual. In the article, most
people who are always behind media bias include political groups and activities. They influence
the news and how it is interpreted. The CNN Trapper Jake asserts that most media covers topic
differently concerning the reaction from the ground. For instance, there was a lobbyist in the
scenario of Brown and Taylor’s case. The case of black crimes and the event of Michael Brown
shooting led to a different reaction that could only be solved by the undercover announcement.
Conclusion
Racism has become rampant in the United States. There are inadequate policies to control
the activities of the media platform. Media platforms have moved away from being liberals and
as such most minority communities are left marginalized. Therefore, the country should come up
with policies that will help in erasing the persisting challenge. Policies should be implemented
on local, state and federal Leve to control media content. The government should enforce the
following strategies; make the media answerable for producing biased information under the
court of law. The government should create a liberal body that monitors the content created by
all media. If the content is biased, then they should face a fine. The law should also allow
minorities to demonstrate and protests against racist Media.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
Convey the causes and consequences in the criminal justice
System
Criminal justice institution is facing a challenge of racial discrimination. Family and the
country has moved beyond the race and entered the era of post-racialism. Racial caste is still
alive, and it is causing more divide in America. The election of United States Barrack Obama did
not reduce the racism mentality at all. The national caste system in the United States is real and
is more rampant in the justice system (Goodman, 2018). Some of the challenges that have not
been solved include drug war on blacks, police brutality, three strike laws in California and the
expansion of American prisons (Rolles, 2016). The criminal justice system is racism and has not
helped in solving the above-stated problems. In the 21st century, people will take you for being
crazy if at all you stated that America still faces such challenges. However, the system has
marginalized the black community, and it has become a norm.
The black community is not fair at all in regards to making a sound judgment. The
criminal justice system does not face the common racial problem like the other institutions.
Different companies and institutions face conscious and unconscious racial discrimination;
however justice organizations are on the other level (Rolles, 20160. Racial stereotyping in
criminal court affects the decision making, and people are not accorded to fair justice and
expression before the law. Mass incarceration in the United States is based on rationalized social
control. As such, the main challenge the criminal justice system is facing is racial stereotyping
and discrimination.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
3
Design principles that are appropriate for your chosen product.
War on the drug has been a topic of debate over a very long time. The highest number of
incarnated blacks in American cell is associated with drug usage. The population has been
increasing with the implementation of new rules and laws in the country (Goodman, 2018). With
the emergence of the drug war, the figure has increased to 1000%. It is true that people of all
races use drugs, but the whole issues have been coined and are defined based on race. The
impoverished community of color seems to use and sell drugs more contrary to the majority
community. However, the study and research conducted have asserted that people sale and use
medicines equally. Drug dealers have been stereotyped such as a black kid standing on the
roadside with pants almost dropping down to sell drugs. The study also highlights that black’s
tent to sell to blacks, whites to whites, university student to a comrade. The child does not walk
from Kansas to Washington to sell drugs, but those in the vicinity do sell. Therefore, if the whole
thing has to be defined based on the race them, whites are more likely to commit crime compared
to the blacks. A survey was conducted in 1995 by the government illustrated that drug war is
stereotyped and 95 percent of participants asserted that that could only envision blacks to sell
drugs. In 2000 a national household survey was conducted and illustrated that white youth
between the age of12 to 17 are most likely to have used and sold illegal drugs in comparison to a
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
black child of the particular period.
4
5
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
Therefore, it is ironical to see the number of blacks increased in the criminal justice
system. In some American states black community constitute 80 to 90 percent of the off
offenders in the jail. Similarly, this criminal is assumed as violent, and that is where the most
discussion ends. Another report published highlighted that there is a significant number of white
student who indulges in cocaine and heroin use in contrast to a black student. most people who
end up in prison are Latino or blacks and face a long term jail term. Since they are perceived as
violent, they end up overstaying imprison leading to an increased number of prisoners
(Goodman, 2018). As such, the country is willing to increase the number of prisons to
accommodate the increasing rate of drug dealers. As per 2008, close to 2.3 million people were
in prison and 5.1 million people under correction community. Most of them end up moving in
and out of jail because they could not go back to their healthy life. Most of them found
themselves marginalized such that they cannot vote and find other social securities. They are
branded second hard citizens and as such treated as a felon. A person is handled following a
criminal record.
Discrepancies between who uses illegal drugs and who is most likely to be arrested for drug
abuse violations.
The extraordinary system came into practice to reduce the rate of drug crime and
minimize cocaine crack within the communities. However, the process has only worsened the
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
6
operation. In fact, before the war on the offense, the drug was not as rampant as it is now (Rolles,
2016). The war had nothing to do with the drug but racial politics that was started with
politicians such as President Reagan. President Reagan only converted the rhetoric war into a
real one. He used it as campaigning strategies to lure the poor white into voting. However, with
time the fight was sidelined, it was done on a racial basis where blacks were seen as the people
who could act as drug dealers. Many black politicians, later on, joined the bandwagon so that
they could keep in touch with the politics at the time.
Discuss the extent to which drug policies or law-enforcement strategies have contributed to
racial and ethnic
The criminal justice system has provided unfairness in the way drug war has been
handled. In most cases, blacks are not allowed to express themselves in the court of law. They
are jailed based on racial stereotype (Goodman, 2018). Blacks are known to be the center and
root of violence. Also, they increased the length of imprisonment drug dealer criminal face harsh
punishment than murdering cases in America. With the emergence of democratic and republic
fight on the drug, both came up with policies that have continued increasing rate of prisoners in
the jail. The federal law allows the local and state law enforcement policies to keep 80% of what
is confiscated as such; there has been a personal interest as well. The dramatic increase of arrest
has been realized with the emergence of federal funding for the platform. Furthermore, the
system has been too tight; however, not focusing on guilty people. Also, 80 percent of criminals
are not violent in those prisons. Additionally, the drug that has been majorly noted by the drug
dealers is marijuana which is not that harmful. Therefore, the system should focus on the most
dangerous drugs and people. Thus, there will be no need for increasing prisons in the country
7
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
Consider any historical or contemporary influences that may have contributed the
disparities you have
The system came into practice through a political platform. President Reagan was the
first president to use the term 'war on drugs.' He wanted to use the weapon to make unhappy
Americans get in touch with his system of leadership. It was part of a Republican Party
campaign strategy. It was a common strategies used at the time to use racially appealing
approach to persuade poor working whites to vote (Rolles, 2016). They were happy with the
civil right movements that favored their kids from attending better schools. Poor working-class
whites were convinced and started working with the president.
On the other hand, the war on drugs emerged, and the whole issues were exaggerated so
that the media could capture the activities and effort of the president. Further, the concentration
was in the smaller communities, and it did not take long until black drug dealers were on the
news. This because they did not follow the ideology of the president. Another reason why the
figure was exaggerated was that the government wanted an increment in the funding of the
project besides public relation
Impact of disparity
Further, the country excludes those people with drug crime record from jury services.
There are employment discrimination and housing discrimination for the victims. People having
a criminal record related to drugs are also excluded from the public benefits and incur fines and
fee at the same time. The system is too harsh on people. When the victims return from prison
70% of them goes back to jail because of the policies that make there live unbearably. The
minority community has had a challenging impact on the issue because they are discriminated in
the court of law. On the other hand, the criminal justice system seems to be okay with the
8
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
ongoing racial discrimination disparity (Goodman, 2018). Majority community seems to enjoy
the whole event because they are not easily noticed while conducting their drug business. No one
will suspect them. Therefore, black communities continue to face poverty challenges and denied
social security needs and basic needs. In the end, the disparity and marginalization in America
continue to widen unlike before criminal justice system founded the policies.
Affirmative action
A broad-based social movement should be formed to fight for injustice in the court of
laws. The change should involve both races, working and non-working class. Most blacks and
Latinos have been left depressed fearful and anxieties due to being center of focus. The
movement should have dynamics of how the whole issue started its historical perspective and
how it can end (Rolles, 2016). Furthermore, the group should put together the dots of challenges
of how marginalized groups and racially discriminated people have suffered. The stereotype
should be tackled because it is usually said that it’s in black’s blood and character to be deviant.
The second option is to appeal to the change of the criminal justice system that has allowed the
current situation to rise.
