RESPECT OF DIFFERENCES
Executive Summary
Respect for difference is a broad term that is used
in the multiculturalism that defines how people value
others socially, their culture, and individual identity.
Respect for difference is likely seen to involve an
attitude of a different kind and its public expression in a
more sophisticated way. Respect for difference is often
differentiated with toleration of disagreements because
toleration of-of disagreements involve putting up with
some cultural behaviors under given permission and no
option is given while respect for differences in
individuals’ decision to value other people’s culture and
beliefs. Respect for difference involves a more general
acceptance of the difference as a legitimate presence in
public rather than a positive valuation of the difference in
question. Respect for difference is ‘more’ than ‘mere’
toleration, not because it necessarily involves a positive
assessment of the difference in question, but because it
allows this difference to be expressed in public rather
than only tolerated on the condition that it is confined to
the private. (Balint, 2006)
