Time-Saving Through Automation Using Optical Character Recognition Technology
Despite major milestones in adopting technologies, organizations still struggle to save
time when it comes to transferring data from one format to another. As a result, organizations
still incur labor costs to perform manual tasks of changing data from a database into document
and pdf formats (Van Der Aalst et al., 2016). Automation is the best approach to solve the issue
and enable organizations to save time on some tasks.
My future job is to be an insurance underwriter. The job entails reviewing insurance
cover applications from clients, assessing risks, and determining if the insurance company can go
ahead and offer coverage to the specific risk. As an underwriter, it will be my responsibility to
approve the application before the insurance company can deduct premiums from clients. The
underwriter also must assess and determine the coverage limits as well as premiums for the
approved policies (Galazar, 2016). In order to complete the tasks, insurance underwriters require
different types of data ranging from risk analysis, appraisal reports, as well as graphical
representations of the same information (Galazar, 2016). Under normal organization procedures,
it may take days before all information reaches the underwriters because of entering data from
manual forms into the computer system before changing it into other formats for storage and
sharing.
My future organization that I plan to work with is Blue Cross Blue Shield Group, which
is a health insurance company and has its operations in Florida, New Jersey, and Michigan,
among other states. The organization handles large amounts of data each day. Client details,
insurance compensation claims as well as insurance cover applications for part of the data that
insurance personnel such as underwriters handle each day.
IMPLEMENTING OPTICAL CHARACTER RECOGNITION
The presentation audience, in this case, would be the leadership team at Blue Cross Blue
Shield Group, the staff, as well as other stakeholders to the insurance company. The leadership
and the employees are the ones who will benefit directly from the OCR technology because it
will enhance work efficiently, thereby guaranteeing better results. The stakeholders will benefit
through revenue increase as a result of time saving and efficiency.
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology has been undergoing significant
transitions over the years. The technology offers automation across different departments in the
organization, enhancing efficiency, and minimizing time spent on processing and transferring
data (Chaudhuri et al., 2017). The insurance company handles different handwritten documents
such as insurance cover application forms and pay cheques. Implementing OCR technology will
not only enable the organization to save time, but it will also enhance accuracy for the final
information that is stored in the computer systems (Chaudhuri et al., 2017). The type of data to
be collected for the research will include the rate of efficiency while using the OCR technology
and the number of hours saved in processing data using the technology.
