Treatment of botulism depends on the type of botulism one has.The three treatments include:
1.Supportive treatment-This entails supporting the body's main functions e.g by mechanical ventilatory support because the muscles used for breathing may be affected.
2.Use of antitoxins-These are special antibodies that inhibit the functions of the clostridium botulinum toxin the nervous system.
3.Removing the source of infection-This is done by use of different appropriate medications to induce vomiting or to mechanically empty the bowel to remove the contaminated food.
Botulism can be prevented by ensuring proper use of canning techniques e.g by pressure cooking or boiling foods properly before canning, preparing and storing food safely, avoid giving honey to infants and never inject or inhale street drugs.
