let x be the second piece

then the first piece is 2x

and the third piece is 3(2x) = 6x

So the length is the total of three pieces, then

first piece + second piece + third piece = 135 ft

2x + x + 6x = 135

9x = 135

x = 135/9

x = 15 ft

so

first piece = 2x = 2(15) = 30 ft

second piece = x = 15 ft

third piece = 6x = 6(15) = 90 ft

Hence the longest piece is third piece which is of 90 ft long.
