Impact of Health Care Policy
Health care policy is defined as strategies, decisions, and actions that are accepted to
improve public health and to reach set health objectives (Matthews, 2017). A health policy
describes objectives and roles of various groups to realize given health goals within the society.
Health care policies have an impact on the nursing profession since they affect how and where
nurses can practice as well as what they can do. Health care policies in different states have an
influence on how a nurse practitioner diagnoses, treats and prescribes medication to their
patients. As a future nurse practitioner, I should be an informed nurse to gain insight and
understanding of how health care policies impact how I will make decisions concerning patient
care. Health care policies outline and integrate proper principles for the provision of care, and
therefore, the policy work will influence processes and standards that assure quality care
(Matthews, 2017). Health care policies also impact resource allocation to bolster the delivery of
healthcare. For instance, the 2010 Affordable Care Act required states to amplify Medicaid to
insure Americans up to 138% of the poverty threshold (Matthews, 2017). The health care policy
affects the nursing practice since nurses always advocate for the patient to access healthcare.
Therefore, the expansion of Medicaid has decreased the number of Americans who are uninsured
and provided more resources for hospitals.
