Ethics and privacy in the workplace are two of the most challenging yet significant elements in
the modern business environment (Hartman, 2001). The desire of organizations to protect
themselves, their resources, and employees from potential harm necessitates the formulation of
guiding principles pertaining to the conduct of individuals in relation to utilization of company
materials (Persson & Hansson, 2003). In this view, ethics play the guiding role of informing
parties on what is acceptable and what is not. It is a framework of codes that define
organizational behavior from the perspective of involved parties. Mainly, it focuses on the
character of employees, which is critical in determining their contribution to the firm.
Some individual behaviors can unintentionally harm the company. For instance, workers
use of organizational resources for personal matters is wasteful and an unnecessary cost to the
investors (Watkins Allen, Coopman, Hart & Walker, 2007). Similarly, the reckless engagement
in online practices can lead to the dissemination of confidential information to outsiders who can
potentially use it for malicious purposes. Also, data on self, colleagues, and associates can be
leaked, thus attracting legal claims or other forms of liability. As a consequence, organizations
install ethical guidelines that ensure people understand the limits of their conduct in the
workplace.
