Between the years 871-899 King Alfred the Great suggested a change in the society, and
he argued that community needs men of prayer, men of war and men of work. It led to the
establishment of the clergy, the warriors, and the peasants. The controversy that occurred was the
question of who was superior to the other. The clergy and the warriors obviously could not
compare to the peasants but determining the most authoritative between the two was an issue.
Women and the minority chiefly Jews were not considered. Women were to stay at home, and
their status was determined by the wealth of their working husbands in the society. The traditional
orders of the community were made up of the following:
➢ Those who prayed: The clergy- The clergy participated in the three orders of the society
through prayers. It constituted of the village priests, Bishops, and monks. They were
considered meaningful because they were believed to be close to God. The clergy members
were mostly the first or the second sons of the noble houses. They appointed their leaders
that would lead in prayer. Though disagreements rose between the monks in the
monasteries and the Bishops in the cathedrals on who would lead the prayers. Each group
had their responsibility, with the village priests looking after the serfs on the manor. Most
of the times, the priests came from poor and illiterate backgrounds; however, not all of
them. Bishops were given a higher rank since they were more educated though their role
was similar to that of the priests. The monks stayed in the monasteries and spent most of
their time in prayer or working in the fields. In the monasteries, the monks were also
educated, and they served the nobles of Europe.
➢ Those who fight- At the medieval ages, the war was expensive and only the knights could
get involved. They could afford to have a horse and a sword which the peasants could not
afford. The knights were nobles who were wealthy and had their residents. They lived in
their estates and owned their piece of land. They owned everything in their pieces of land;
including the people who lived in their manor (estate) know as serfs. These nobles their
primary responsibility was to meet the military obligations that were assigned to them by
the higher nobles. They also received military assistance from lower nobles. The military
nobles spent much of their time in training for war and attending tournaments of other
fighters.
