HUMA 101/Writing Assignments 1 The Writing Assignments • • • • • There are four (4) short writing assignments @ 5 points of “additional credit” each due throughout the semester (see calendar at end of syllabus for the due dates—NOTE that these assignments are due on exam days—in class, hard copy only). Each assignment should be at least 4-5 paragraphs (absolutely no more than 5 paragraphs) at about 100-150 words per paragraph. NOTE that your response should come from you and what you’ve read in the textbook. DO NOT use other outside sources. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Unit 1 (Chapters 1-3)—DUE DATE: See calendar on syllabus: 1. The textbook suggests reasons why our ancestors built megalithic structures, such as the menhir alignments at Carnac, France, and Stonehenge in England. Some people believe there must have non-human (extraterrestrial alien) intervention or help with such structures. Consider one of the megalithic structures described in Chapters 1-3, describe it, and then present your reasoning why humans would or would not need “outside help” to build such a structure. (Questions? See me.) Unit 2 (Chapters 4-6)—DUE DATE: See calendar on syllabus: 1. In a comparison/contrast format, describe and discuss the Classical statue Doryphoros and the Hellenistic statue Apoxyomenos. (Suggestion: focus on form and effect, and be specific.) (Questions? See me.) Unit 3 (Chapters 7-9 & 11)— DUE DATE: See calendar on syllabus: 1. Like the Muslims, the Roman/Byzantine (Christian) emperor Leo III argued that God had prohibited religious images in the second commandment: “Thou shalt not make any graven image, or any likeness or any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.” Iconophiles claimed that the images were a form of worship. What do you think? Are images objects that can be worhipped? Referencing specific works from chapter 8 or 9 (and even 7 & 11) as well as any popular culture objects that come to mind, construct your own argument for or against religious images. (Questions? Consider the development of the university, its curriculum, and its degree achievement (beginning in Bologna, Italy).
