Introduction
Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis is an acute periodontal disease. The disease is a type of
necrotizing periodontal condition that occurs due to insufficient necrosis to the gingival tissues.
The condition has a series of severe gingivitis and ulcerations. Other characteristics include;
bleeding and gingival necrosis. Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis has occurred for centuries. The
disease that has had different names over several years was first recognized among the military in
World War I. The occurrence of the condition among this demographic was due to poor dental
hygiene, poor nutritional balance and psychological stress.
Moreover, the condition was later realized in lower rates among the public. Alarming rates
of the disease are present among patient living with immunodeficiency diseases (Horning &
Cohen, 2015). This includes diseases like HIV and AIDS. Recent studies reveal the vulnerability
of the populations within the armed forces. Similarly, demographics such as tobacco smokers and
patients which traumatic conditions are vulnerable to the disease.
Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis primarily occurs in North America and Europe. The
condition is commonly known to attack youths and teenagers in the early 20s (Johnson & Engel,
