The key skills I have learned from this are, first of all in-depth presentation of key skills or experiences and showing how they relate to the job I am applying for. The second skill is written communication skills relevant to showing my abilities in the job market.
As concerns presentation of key skills, this is very important since the CV is an abridged version of my experiences over the year. In the cover letter I can go into detail of the day to day use of skills I consider relevant to the applied position. This is the one chance to impress the recruiter, and a strong first impression goes a long way in ensuring you get the job.
The cover letter also demonstrates the applicant's communication skills. This is also very key since they are most likely going to be working in a team environment with transfer of instructions, drawing up reports and other internal communications being very important. This of course needs someone with at least average communication skills otherwise the chain breaks down. Thus the cover letter is a good chance to showcase one's communication abilities.
These two skills are what stood out to me as key in improving my cover letter writing for job applications.
