Running Head: LITERATURE AND MUSIC

Nov. 06--Antonio Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is kind of like an early Beatles or Green Day song.
It's the classical piece most young string players start off with and one that they carry throughout
their careers.
One of the most widely known pieces of classical music, whether it be from its relationship to
telephone hold music, National Public Radio or young musicians, it remains a staple of classical
artists decades into their career.
"I've been playing this piece for, I don't know, 20 years, maybe more. 30?" St. Joseph Symphony
director Rico McNeela says. "It's one of those things that you grow up playing and when you're
young, you play it like a kid and when you're older, hopefully you play it better."
Working on the piece since he first started as a string player, McNeela is thrilled to be able to revisit it, along with a piece from Johannes Brahms, during the Saint Joseph Symphony Chamber
concert on Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 2618 Seneca St.
"It's some of the greatest music that was written in the Baroque period ... I think a lot of people
have heard it before and look forward to hearing it live," McNeela says.
From the opening notes of its first movement "Concerto No. 1 'La primavera' (Spring)," it's like
"Come Together" or "When I Come Around," instantly recognizable and unforgettable.
Even though McNeela jokes if he saw his young self playing it now he would tell him to do
better, he has no regrets that while he may have sloppily performed it in the beginning, the piece
was a firm part of his musical roots.
