Endocrine functions

The placental unit produces the following hormones.

1. Progesterone

Produced by the placenta from day 42.

2. HcG ( human chorionic gonadotropin)

3. Human placental lactogen( hPL)

it’s the “growth hormone” of pregnancy

4. Human chorionic corticotrophin

  Physiologic role is unknown.

5. Estrogens

6.  Placental proteins

7 .Fetal hormones

  eg.Thyroid hormone, ACTH

In the circulatory interplay, blood is delivered to the fetus from the maternal circulation via the umbilical vein  and carried to the placenta via the two umbilical arteries
