Definitions
Weather and climate are most often used interchangeably despite them refereeing to
different events. Local atmospheric conditions that occur over short periods may be from days to
an hour to minutes are referred to as weather. They include winds, snow, rains, thunderstorm,
and floods. While climate is the long term global or regional average of temperatures, rainfall
patterns, humidity over seasons or years. Air, water, permafrost and ice, living things and earth’s
upper mantle and crust form the climate system. The sun provides energy to the climate system,
which also gives off heat to the outer space. Earth’s energy budget is determined by the
balancing of the heat coming and getting out of the climate system
Climate change may be defined as a broad range of global phenomena that are created
predominantly burning fossils fuels. The burning fuels eventually add gases that trap heat to the
earth’s atmosphere. The new weather patterns are characterized by increased temperature trends,
which are mainly defined by global warming, ice mass loss, shifts in plant/flower blooming,
changes in sea level rise and extreme weather events. Global warming is the long-term warming
of the planet caused by the increase in fossil fuel emissions. Global warming was mainly noted
in the late 1970s and has rapidly increased since the Industrial Revolution as average surface
temperatures have increased by one degree Celsius.
