Perishable Goods and Markets
Perishable goods are goods that spoil and lose their value and quality quickly (Saurav,
2018). From an economics point of view Ojugo, (2009), notes there are key traits associated
with perishable goods; they are seasonal, their prices fluctuate and are more frequently purchased
(83). A key characteristic associated with perishable goods is their short shelf life (Rawat, 2015).
In this regard, they should be consumed after purchase or production or stored in optimal storage
conditions. Perishable goods require special measures such as freezing and canning to ensure
they are stored in good condition for longer periods (FAO, 1981). Surely, the short life span is
clearly a major factor in the use of storage facilities when preserving and reducing wastages
during transporting perishable goods. Cold storage of perishable goods retard quality loss and
inhibit growth on spoilage organism in the foods (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1976).
Examples of perishable goods range from flowers, milk, fruits, vegetables, tobacco to donated
body organs and medication products.
