ROLE OF STORYTELLING IN REYNA GRANDE’S “THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US”
The paper is divided into two main sections.
First, it discusses the role of the art of storytelling in which the paper takes the role of that
Grand took to inform the audience on how difficult it is for the family to reconnect once it has
separated. Grande’s family may have regained physical closeness but it became difficult to recover
the emotional connection they had lost due to the detachment which resulted from their parents
leaving them in Mexico to search for better opportunities famously known as the “American
Dream” in the United States.
The second and last section is a reflection and conclusion of the role that Grand’s
storytelling played. In this reflection we find that Immigration is an inevitable topic when it comes
to the U.S. and its inhabitants. It is clear that the ultimate sacrifice of chasing the American Dream
is the abandonment of family members especially parents who live their children who suffer
loneliness. Later it becomes difficult for the family to reengage due to the emotional detachment
occasioned by the separation.
