Eating disorders are an illness that people experience severe concerns about their eating
behaviors that affect their emotions as well as thoughts. With society continuing to prize thinness
at a time when people are getting overweight, there is a chance that at some point, many people
will get worried about their body weight. People with eating disorders do take their worries to the
extremes as they start developing abnormal eating ways that put their lives as well as well-being
at risk. Most of the people with eating disorders come from the wealthy industrialized countries,
whereby around 2% of the women and 0.8% of men get affected (Williamson, Martin & Stewart,
2004). The main eating disorders are a binge-eating disorder, pica, anorexia nervosa, rumination
disorder, and bulimia nervosa. These disorders can, however, get treated if they are identified in
time before they cause a significant adverse effect on the individual.
Eating is essential for every human being for survival, and well-functioning of the body.
The human body, therefore, has an inbuilt mechanism that regulates when people eat and how
much they eat. Appetite and eating habits are influenced by a number of factors such as the
environment, culture and nature of the body. Eating disorders are therefore caused when an
individual ignores the normal body appetite and eats less or excess. There are several reasons why
many individuals suffer from eating disorders. The main reason that can lead to an individual
developing eating disorder is having significant concerns about their body weight. Individuals that
think they are thin or overweight may alter their eating habits to either overeat or eat ...
