Hallo psmith6862,Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

A large number of the population is being diagnosed with lung cancer in United States and the rest of the world. Smoking is said to be a major factor causing the disease. Smoking causes approximately 80% of cancer cases while another portion is brought about by passive smoking.

However, the length of time one is a smokers is directly proportional to the likelihood of him/her developing cancer. It is not the amount of cigarette on smoke in a day that really influences cancer but rather the length of time one smokes.

Those who start smoking at a young age are more likely to develop cancer in future than those that started smoking at adulthood.

Passive smoking is said to be more harmful that actual smoking. Passive smokers are less likely to develop cancer that actual smokers but however, passive smokers are at greater risk than non smokers.

Lung cancer is also associated with genetic heredity. According to research, one is at higher risk of getting lung cancer if one of his/her parents or close relative had lung cancer hence Lung cancer is genetic. This is due to heredity of mutant genes. Lung cancer patients undergo treatment. Chemotherapy and lung transplant are the widely used remedies for lung cancer. However quitting smoking and rather never smoking at all is better that curing.
