TECHNOLOGY IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN

Introduction
The global economy has grown significantly over the last five decades and this has left
the world with a very diverse economy. Even more significant has been the growth of businesses
that operate across different countries and are able to grow their profits by having operations in
new markets. Globalization of businesses has also led to the expansion of supply chains as
businesses are able to make goods in one country and sell them in many other countries (Ross,
2016). This has led to a significant expansion of the supply chains that supply both goods and
raw material. Managing these supply chains effectively is a challenge and businesses have had to
innovate to keep up with the needs of the supply chains. Making use of various technologies in
the supply chain allows for smooth and efficient operations and saves both time and money that
could have been wasted.
Communication
For any supply chain to be successful, the flow of information is critical to guaranteeing
that all the stakeholders are in the know about what is happening and what is expected to happen.
The communication involved the passing on information about a wide variety of issues with
regard to the materials that are being transported in the supply chain (Jacobs, Yu, & Chavez,
2016). The information on the timing of the shipment is also critical to determine whether goods
will arrive in time for the market. The movement of information is critical to the operations of
any supply chain.
In the current business world, supply chain managers make use of several methods of
communication. The first is the use of telephones that allow individuals to have direct
conversations that they can pass information through at all times. Second and more common is

the use of the internet to send messages and to communicate effectively (Zsidisin, Hartley,
Bernardes, & Saunders, 2015). These messages are sent through emails and even formal live
video communication sites. The transition of information can allow managers to plan in advance
and to also make adjustments when necessary without costing the company.
