Description

This assignment has two parts.

Part 1:
Write a 2–3 page evaluation of the quality improvement program that you have created. This should be the annual summary of the hypothetical data. Make sure your hypothetical data are credible.

Part 2:
As you may recall from Week 1, your Course Project was to prepare a total quality improvement program, with a focus on one high-risk area. Continuous quality improvement covers many areas. Throughout the course, you have learned about the attributes that constitute a quality improvement team and what questions this team attempts to answer. The assignments toward this project that you completed each week can now be assembled into a single instructional document.

Make necessary adjustments to your document so that each segment flows smoothly into the next. Evaluate your project using the criteria given below.

  1. Are the indicators and their measurements appropriate to the high-risk area? Do the indicators capture the risk?
  2. Are the fictional incidents realistic and plausible?
  3. Is the filled chart consistent with the fictional incident?
  4. Is the plan of correction feasible? Will it prevent the occurrence of the incident in future?
  5. How do you know the plan worked? What measures will you use to identify effectiveness?

Include an introduction, conclusion and reference page to this assignment.

Part 1: Evaluating on Quality improvement in surgery
Introduction
Surgery is the most important and challenging area in the healthcare industry as it is
responsible for saving a lot of lives all around the world. There is therefore need for
improvement of services within the surgery world to ensure that complications do not arise when
performing surgery. Improvement of quality will not be an easy task. Stakeholders including the
surgeons and nurses themselves must therefore work together to ensure success in this field. This
paper seeks to evaluate the reliability of programs that have been put in place to ensure that
qualities of surgical procedures are maintained. Some of the programs put in place may include;
The Universal Protocol
This protocol published in 2003 by a joint commission involves completing three
procedures before performing any surgical procedure. Before any surgical procedure, the
surgical team has to ensure that; all the documents and equipment that are required for the
process are made available, correctly identified and labelled and reviewed carefully to the
expectations of the patient and any missing equipment addressed and accounted for (Uusitalo,
Brans, Pessi, & Tarkkanen, 2009). The surgical team must then ensure that the site of operation
should be clearly marked. Finally, according to this protocol, the team has to perform a final
overall assessment to ensure that everything is in place. This protocol when followed ensures
that success and quality is given priority during the surgical process

The world health organization has provided the surgical area with a checklist to ensure
that lives are no lost and complications are minimized during the surgery process. According to
(Ergina, Cook, Blazeby, Boutron, Clavien, Reeves & Balliol Collaboration, 2009)This checklist
involves everything from the preparation of the surgical room and equipment, administration of
anesthesia, the main surgery processes and even after the patient leaves the room. The checklist
is available in each and every hospital and the medical team has to go through it before each and
every surgical procedure to ensure they understand what they are supposed to do. This checklist
has gone a long way in promoting safety during surgical procedures.
Involving Patients
The patient has to be involved in the surgical process to ensure that everything that
happens he or she is able to consent. The patient also understands his or her medical history thus
knows what procedures may be harmful to his or her health and what needs to be done incase an
emergency occurs. The surgical team should also be able to inform the patient of the processes
and risks involved to make the patient ready. This will also ensure that the relationship between
the doctor and the patient is at its peak to ensure success of the whole procedure.
Minimizing Distractions
The surgical environment should be free of any disruptions to ensure that the surgical
team focuses on the surgical procedures. Distractions may lead to errors especially whenever
critical organs are involved. Also, the surgical team should keep their conversations professional
to ensure success of the whole surgical process.
