In 1903 the following famous poem by Emma Lazarus was engraved and placed upon the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Think about this poem’s message. Did immigrants’ experiences reflect the hope and promise of this poem?

The New Colossus
By Emma Lazarus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The New Colossus
Introduction
The New Colossus is a poem that was written by Emma Lazarus to compare the statue of
liberty and the ancient Colossus at Rhodes. Emma Lazarus was a known proponent of
immigration and wrote this famous poem as an inspiration to the immigrants to hope of the
immigrants. The author carefully chose her ideas by applying various literary devices which
makes more meditative and thoughtful for the target audience. Some of these literary devices
include metaphors, similes, imagery personification, alliteration, etc. Emma Lazarus sought to
pass a message in her poem by creating a scenario using two well-known landmarks in the
world. These are the Statute of Liberty and the Colossus of Rhodes. The comparison is made in
the title and the first line whereby Lazarus explains that The New Colossus is not the same as that
of Rhodes where there were war and battles to conquer lands belonging to the enemies (Gale 10).
The main message is explored in the third line whereby The New Colossus is described as a
mighty woman holding a torch in her hands and a beacon of hope to welcome the immigrants
from all over the world (Hieronimus and Laura 125). In this essay, I will explore the real
meaning of The New Colossus poem and immigrants experiences within the poem. I believe the
United States has tried in the past to live up to the promises in The New Colossus but has
recently failed especially with the new Trump administration.
