Chicano People
The Chicano or sometimes known as the Chicana is a term used to refer a group of
Mexican Americans in the U.S. The term originated from the Chicano movement which saw the
Mexican Americans express their cultural, ethnic and identity. At those moments, the group felt
oppressed and discriminated by the Caucasian society. The name before the movement was
being used as a pejorative word, but the group decided to use it to empower themselves
(Loughrin). Currently, the community has embraced the term and is being used as an identity
that brings about hope and pride. The word at first was used to refer to all Mexicans but later
shifted to those Mexicans born on the American soil. Currently, they represent a significant
percentage in some states, which include California, Mexico, Texas, Nevada, and Colorado. The
Chicano community can be differentiated from other American communities regarding their
social, cultural, economic, and political elements.
