Phonemes
Phenome is the smallest unit of speech. It differentiates one word from another. A phenome
is based on spoken language. Sometimes, it is normally recorded with special symbols. Notably,
during transcription, linguists conventionally place symbols for phenomes between slash marks: /p/.
Phenomes are customarily restricted to vowels as well as consonants. However, some linguists
extend its use to cover phonologically reliable differences of pitch and rhythm. Therefore, in
phonics, people are taught to read the pure sound as opposed to letter names. An example is where
the sound /s/ is pronounced ‘ssssss’ and not ‘es’ or ‘suh’.
Morphemes
A morpheme is an expressive linguistic unit. It consists of a word such as dog. It may also
consist of a word element such as the –s at the end of dogs. A morpheme cannot be divided into
smaller meaningful parts. Morphemes, therefore, are the smallest units that comprise of a meaning
in a language. There are two kinds of morphemes. Free morphemes and bound morphemes. Free
morphemes are usually separate words. On the other hand, bound morphemes cannot stand alone as
words.
