Parents Should Not Kidnap Children’s Future
There is no doubt that every parent wants the best for his or her child in terms of
academic excellence and professional growth. A successful career is one of the surest ways in
which a child's future financial security can be sealed, which, in turn, increases the likelihood of
the child having a good quality of life in the future. In an attempt to help their children, secure a
more promising future, many parents choose the career paths that they believe would be great for
their children (Irwin and Elley 111). Some of the factors that affect the parents' inclination
toward some professions include their backgrounds, salaries, job prospects, and social status
associated with such careers. However, the parents tend to ignore the fact that children have their
preferences and inherent talents that should play a pivotal role in shaping their future. By forcing
their children to choose certain careers against their wishes, parents end up kidnapping the
children's future and even limiting their ability to prosper and realize their dreams. Therefore,
since the university should be a place where student’s skills, talents, and capabilities are
cultivated and nurtured, parents should not pressurize their children on the specific career paths
that they should follow; rather, they should advice and support them accordingly based on the
children’s wishes and aspirations.
Parent’s pressure on student’s career choices is caused by a wide array of factors. One of
the most integral factors that lead parents to force children toward certain careers is parental
values and expectations. Parents will always favor some careers to others based on their inherent

values and preferences. For example, some parents may feel that being a doctor is more
respectable than being a pilot. While they may not necessarily have anything against being a
