Abstract
Performance appraisals are periodic reviews of employees to determine their performance
and contribution to the achievement of organizational goals. They fulfil several objectives or
purposes which will be discussed in this essay. They can be conducted through different
methods, whose effectiveness and relevance differs based on the organization or employee under
consideration.

Performance Appraisal
Definition
Performance appraisal is the regular review and evaluation of an employee’s performance
as well as their contribution to the organization. Such appraisals evaluate the skills of the
employee, their growth and job-related achievements, potential for future growth, and the
possible implications of these factors on the overall success of the organization. Performance
appraisals feature different standards on which the performance of the employee is compared to
determine compliance or lack thereof. This essay features a hypothetical performance review of
an assistant healthcare administrator complete with my candid evaluation of their performance
within the organization.
Purpose
According to The International Journal of Human Resource Management, performance
appraisals are one of the most important practices of the human resource function of
management (Kampkotter, 2016). Furthermore, the journal adds, performance appraisals play a
critical role in the determination of some of the factors related to employees such as bonus
