Introduction
In the course of life, there come natural disasters from time to time. In as much as most of
them meet the society well unawares, their effects have been deadly throughout the history of
their occurrences. Natural disasters occur in different periods and relation to different elements.
There are tornados, floods, tsunamis, and hurricanes, just but to mention a few. For this paper, I
will focus on hurricanes. A hurricane is a tropical cyclone that usually occurs in tropical and
subtropical waters. Hurricanes have a massive impact on society after their occurrence and leave
a very large amount of destruction.
In particular, I will talk about Hurricane Harvey, which has been identified as one of the
most detrimental hurricanes alongside the 2005's Hurricane Katrina. The hurricanes are
estimated to have caused damages worth 125 billion dollars. This only highlights the point that
hurricanes are very catastrophic and can be very costly to individuals and nations as well.
However, in as much as there exist various deadly outcomes of such tragic events, some
individuals manage to live to see another day. This can be very well depicted by the survival
stories that come to the surface after the events pass. One such example in correlation with
Hurricane Harvey is the survival story of Aril Harrison aged 43.
April Harrison Survival Story
April and her sons managed to escape their home in Port Arthur following the floods that
had emanated from the natural disaster (Taturn, 2017). Being a victim of two other previous
hurricanes, April could only despair as she underwent the trauma all over again. The tragic day
saw her watch the floods increase bit by bit into her house when she could do nothing but watch.
Since she had not been aware of any announcements for evacuations, April stood her ground in
