The Play and Analysis
The Crucible is an intriguing play which was written in the mid-20th century, it describes
the story of Salem women who deceitfully alleged that the villagers cast a spell on them. The
girls had been found dancing naked in the forest and when they were confronted, they placed the
blame on witchcraft. It was a severe accusation which necessitated the formation of a special
court to investigate the allegations of witchcraft. The allegations and subsequent trials resulted in
a chaotic society that saw 200 villagers arrested and 19 deaths recorded. These events took place
in Salem, Massachusetts, during the Salem witch trials in 1692 (Hodge & McLain, 2015).
