Understanding insanity defense
Insanity defense is a legal concept predominantly used in criminal prosecutions. It bases
its reason on the assumption when the crime was committed, the accused was suffering from a
critical mental illness and as a result, was incapacitated from appreciating the magnitude and
nature of the crime and distinguishing right from wrong behavior. Therefore, the accused is not
legally accountable for committing the crime. Nonetheless, the determination of legal insanity
