Legalizing Marijuana in Alabama
Introduction
In the recent past, Alabama’s Governor signed into law a bill that aims at legalizing the
use of marijuana for medical purposes. It took the State a number of years of an attempt to
legalize marijuana for medicines. Eventually, the law found its way to become one of the laws in
Alabama.
Background information
Alabama banned marijuana in 1931. The state followed the ban for a long time until 2012
when Kevon Brown introduced a bill that would see cannabis legalized for medical purposes. He
introduced the bill as The Alabama Medical Marijuana Patients Rights Act. This bill was
unlucky since it failed in the committee (Barcott, 2015). In 2014, Governor Robert Bentley
signed into law Carly’s law. This law permitted the University of Alabama to offer nonpsychoactive CBD to children who faced debilitating seizure. However, this did not open up the
use of marijuana to all institution or public.
In 2015, Senator Bobby Singleton introduced a bill which he called Medical Marijuana
Patient Safe Access Act. This bill aimed at permitting patients with about twenty-five conditions
to access marijuana for medical purposes. This bill went through the Senate Judiciary
Committee. However, the bill did not survive the Senate floor. It failed on the bases of bad
legalization. In 2019, Tim Melson proposed a law that legalized marijuana for medical purposes.
The bill focused on creating a process to prescribe marijuana for specific medical conditions. Mr.
Melson claimed that the research outlines that marijuana could be instrumental to a certain
chronic medical condition by offering relief (Martin, & Rashidian, 2014).
