Ethics Case Studies Everyone will research the following engineering disasters below and compile a poster explaining the ethical issues present. Then, you will review the posters for each of the other cases and respond with comments. You will be graded on both your poster submission and your comments about other’s posters. Topic to be covered by your team ((((((((((((((((((((Volkswagen Emissions)))))))))))))))))))) this is the topic 1. Research the event, gathering as much detail as possible. Be sure to relate to the NSPE Code of Ethics for Engineers. Use MLA citations. You need to include at least 3 sources 2. Then, create a poster (using a single PowerPoint slide) outlining the following items: • Case study name, team member names, course information • What happened? • Who was responsible? • What was ethically wrong with the case? • What could have been handled differently? • What were the consequences and outcomes of the poor decisions? • References 3. Finally, you will review each of the other cases presented by your team mates and comment on the following: • Did the posters completely and accurately explain the basic details of the case? Were any components unclear? Was the level of detail appropriate (not too in-depth or too vague)? • Do you agree with the teams’ analysis regarding the ethical issues present in the case? Why or why not? Are there any additional concerns you see? • Do you agree with the team’s explanation of how the situation could have been handled differently? Why or why not? Would you suggest anything different? Poster Rubric Group:______________________________________________ Grade: _ ___/100 Task OVERALL IMPRESSION (10pts) 1. Individual sections are distinct 2. Three distinct columns are visible 3. Sections in a column line up on the left and right sides. There is equal space between all the sections. 4. In a logical order/progression 5. Section headings are bold and slightly larger text than the body to make it stand out 6. Font is large enough to see from 5 feet away TOP ROW OF BOXES (10 pts) 1. Logo or team name present in upper left corner 2. The following things are in the upper right hand corner of the poster: ENGR 101- section number, Current semester, Instructor’s name, Group # ___ 3. Center box has the following components: MEANINGFUL title (largest text on the poster, really stands out) (6) Team member’s names (1) Affiliation (Statler College information listed) (1) INTRODUCTION, BACKGROUND, PROBLEM STATEMENT (10 pts) 1. Can be in separate boxes or combined Points possible 1 1 1 2 2 3 1 1 8 Optional 2. Bullets or short paragraphs 2 3. Explains purpose (Introduction) 3 4. Explains goals (Problem statement) 3 5. Describes past research and other background information. 2 METHODOLOGY AND MATERIALS (10 pts) 1. Describes what materials were used 2. Describes what was done to solve the problem, including both iterations 2 8 RESULTS (15 pts) 1. Important results from the experimentation or the design testing. Summarize the important results in words, along with the important figures that are outlined in the next section. 2. Center of the poster and largest section to show importance FIGURES and/or TABLES (15 pts) 1. 2-4 important figures and or tables 2. Clear and appropriate size 3. Figures and tables are relevant to the project and make a point. Each visual should illustrate a different idea (no need to be repetitive) 4. Figures and pictures/images have captions and listed as “Figure #” Tables have titles and listed as “Table #” 5. Can be combined as one box with results DISCUSSION (10 pts) 1. Briefly explains the meaning of the results 2. No more than 5 sentences or bullets CONCLUSIONS (10 pts) 1. Bulleted 2. Answers the problem statement and address whether the objectives were met. Lists all major conclusions of this project 3. Includes future work/real world applications for this project topic REFERENCES (10 pts) 1. Only include references used on the poster. Lower right corner, reduced font size. 2. Proper use of in-text citations (MLA format) 3. Proper MLA formatting for each resource. 12 3 2 2 3 8 Optional 8 2 2 6 2 2 4 4 Points earned TECHNICAL POSTERS Engineering 101 LAYOUT WHAT IS A TECHNICAL POSTER • A technical poster acts as a summary of your entire project. • The poster must tell the whole story – What were you trying to do – How did you do it – What did you find • The Poster is an Abstract – More visual content and detail than abstract – But it’s also NOT the whole tech report on poster board TYPICAL HEADINGS • Introduction/Problem Statement/Background – Purpose, problem, and objectives – Give limited background research, just the most important info (MLA in-text citations needed) • Methods and Materials – Includes materials and what was done to solve the problem • Results – What was found – Use figures, graphs, tables, etc. Label appropriately – Include pictures of your model! TYPICAL HEADINGS • Discussion – Interpret Results. Explain all graphs and tables • Conclusions – Answers the problem statement and address whether the objectives were met. – Include future work and real-world applications • References – Only include references used on the poster – MLA – Font size may be reduced WHAT MAKES A GREAT POSTER? • Follow the rubric • Use pleasing colors (poster printer will not work with dark backgrounds) • Include Pictures of your model • Separate sections with – White space – Lines WHAT MAKES A GREAT POSTER? • Use photos and graphs – Pictures of your model even if you plan to have it with you the day of presentations – Graphs and tables can tell more than text and are more appealing • Keep text to minimum – – – – Use only absolutely necessary text Complete sentences or bullets 3-7 five sentences per text block Keep fonts large enough to see 3-5 feet away LAYOUT LAYOUT Figure 1: This is an example of a poorly done poster. Consider what is bad about this. WHY IS THE POSTER ON THE PREVIOUS PAGE SO BAD? • No logical order to the sections • Unorganized • Most important thing should be in the middle… introduction is not the most important thing! • Graphics are not meaningful • Boxes/sections don’t line up… looks unprofessional • No graphs, tables… • TOO MANY WORDS! EXAMPLES Figure 2: This example is better, but still needs improvement. Consider what could be improved. PRINTING YOUR POSTER • Instructions on how to print your poster are located in the ELC, but you will need to bring your file ON A FLASH DRIVE to 174 ESB (next to Build Lab) – Look for a piece of paper over your computer labeled “POSTER PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS” • You can print at the Library for ~$10 • PRINT EARLY! DO NOT WAIT until the day of the expo to print *Plan to mount poster on harder posterboard or a trifold board so it is self-standing* HOW TO SET UP MY POSTER 1. Open up PowerPoint 2. Create new presentation (you will only need 1 slide) 3. Click on the tab “Design” 4. Click on “slide size” 5. Click on “custom slide size” 6. Set width to 36 inches 7. Set height to 24 inches HOW TO SET UP MY POSTER 8. Make sure that the slides orientation is in landscape and click “ok” 9. Click “Ensure fit” 10.Notice, the zoom in at ~28% 11.Note: If you set the zoom to 100%, you should be able to see all text from ~5 feet away 12.This slide is now 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide 13.You are good to go! GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS • Never use – – – – – small sheets of paper construction paper, notebook paper markers, crayons clip art decorative elements anything hand-written • Always – Use color and font rules as for Power Points – Use two sided tape or spray adhesive – Roll up, don’t fold MORE INFO & TEMPLATES • The definitive site – http://colinpurrington.com/tips/academic/posterdesign • • • • • • • • NC State http://www.ncsu.edu/project/posters/index.html Eastern KY http://people.eku.edu/ritchisong/posterpres.html Penn State http://www.writing.engr.psu.edu/posters.html Colorado State http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/guide.cfm?guide id=78
