Background Information

Chelsea Elizabeth Manning was born on 17th December 1987 in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma. Chelsea Manning was born as Bradley Edward Manning and is one of the leading
transgender national figures in the United States of America. Chelsea’s mother was originally
from Wales while her father is an American citizen. At a very young age, Chelsea was fascinated
by the American military and hoped to join the greatest military in the world and serve her
country just as her father. Brian Manning, Chelsea’s father, was a retired military officer who at
the age of nineteen enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, Brian served as an
intelligence analyst in which he played a critical role in military operations. While stationed in
Wales in the renowned RAF Brawdy, Brian met the love of his life Susan Fox – Chelsea’s
mother. He later married Susan and moved with her to the United States of America where they
started a family. The young couple first moved to California but soon relocated from the city to a
farm in Oklahoma (Brownworth, 2014).
Unfortunately, Chelsea never had a childhood filled with parental love and care. Both
Susan and Brian were alcoholics and never had the time and compassion to raise their children.
Later, during court-martial proceedings, Chelsea's sister testified as to her parents' alcoholism
which affected the quality of life that they lived as children. Alcoholism greatly affected both
Chelsea's parents to the extent that the young family would sometimes not afford basic
amenities, such as adequate food and clothing. The parental irresponsibility is exuberated by the
fact that Susan continually drank alcohol while pregnant with Chelsea. Consequentially, Chelsea
suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome which impaired her normal development as a foetus and
consequentially affecting her early childhood development (Maxwell, 2015). Further, Chelsea
suffered from parental neglect as a young baby as her parents were mostly intoxicated to the
level of not providing for her. It was Chelsea's sister, Casey, who stood up to be her primary
caregiver. Casey, though also still a child, had the responsibility of feeding the young Chelsea by
the bottle at night as their parents slept in a drunken stupor. The above-listed facts led Chelsea to
suffer from physical development related issues into adulthood as he grew to be 5 feet 2 inches
and weighed around one hundred and five pounds.
Based on the high-level information technology and use of computer systems that Brian
was exposed to during his military service, he soon got a job as an IT manager in one of the
biggest car rental companies in the United States of America. However, the new job required
frequent travelling across the various corporate and franchisee locations across the country.
Therefore, Brian was continually on the road leaving his young family behind. With her father
away for work and her mother suffering from alcoholism, young Chelsea was left to take care of
herself. Most of her time, she spent on the computer, therefore, developing a lot of interest in
information technology and computer systems. With time, she polished her computing skills and
would sometimes seek help from her father who was a specialist in the sector. Generally,
Chelsea had a troubled childhood as she became socially reclusive and learnt to be a loner at
quite a young age (Norris, 2013).
As a young child, Chelsea was quite opinionated and held pronounce reservations on the
intricate link between religion and politics. Young Chelsea questioned the role of religion in
politics and in a sign of protest remained quiet during the recitation of the Allegiance Pledge
especially on the part that referred to God (Benkler, 2014). Chelsea believed that religion had no

place in politics, and it was dangerous for there to be a link between the two. From this young
age, Chelsea was starting to cut an edge for herself as an activist. Further, by the age of ten,
Chelsea had already mastered most computer operations and was highly skilled in information
technology. At this age, Chelsea had already developed a website and excelled in science and
computer studies in school. The young Chelsea won numerous local and State science
competitions as it became clear that her level of skill and expertise in computer applications was
extraordinary for a person of her age.
In 1998, Chelsea’s mother – Susan – attempted suicide as she suffered through a period
of emotional and psychological instability. It was left to the young Crescent do drive her mother
to the hospital as the eleven-year-old Chelsea sat with her mother in the back seat making sure
that she was alive. These childhood experiences greatly affected Chelsea as she had no one to
look up to. The adults in her life were alcoholics and were the source of problems that she faced.
At the age of thirteen, Chelsea’s parents divorced, and Chelsea moved with her mother to an
apartment in Oklahoma (Brownworth, 2014). During this time, Chelsea had a lot of emotional
and mental health issues as she was left with her alcoholic mother who was deteriorating by the
day. Strikingly, Chelsea’s father remarried in the same year that she divorced Susan.
Interestingly, Charles remarried a lady also named Susan. Chelsea did not take the divorce quite
well and was further offended when her stepbrother took up the surname ‘Manning’ as she felt
that she was no one anymore.
Soon thereafter, Chelsea and her mother le...
