Project Proposal
One of the major problems faced in the informaticist’s work environment is the duality of
roles. This comes about as a result of two monitoring aspects, that is, the use of monitoring
machines plus nurses also monitoring the machines themselves. Despite the extensive application
of technology in a health care organization setting, nursing informaticists still have to do
physical rounds to collect patient data from different departments. While EHRs are designed to
collect, store and retrieve patient data at any time, some kind of data are difficult to collect,
hence the need for nurses to make physical rounds while collecting this data. These unavailable
data stems from machines which are physically installed in patient wards and have no direction
to the EHR system. These standalone machines must be physically monitored in order to
guarantee effective patient outcomes. In dealing with cardiac monitors and vital sign monitors,
most health care institutions have resorted to giving nurses monitoring bracelets or alternative
tools which give alerts in case the machines register some abnormalities in patient progress.
