Description

Your paper should be 4-5 pages in length, in APA format. Cover page, reference page, and abstract are not included in the page count. Choose a population with which you are not familiar, or with whom you feel uncomfortable. This will help to familiarize you with your chosen population and enable you to provide better counseling services for them in the future.

For this assignment, you must go beyond the reading of our textbooks, and interview a prominent member of the culture you want to write about, and study and cite in your paper at least three peer-reviewed journal papers dealing with issues specific to that culture. While data about your population, and details about your interviewee's life can be included, your paper should be focused on the views that this culture holds about counseling, and on how to counsel clients from your chosen population.

COUNSELLING PEOPLE OF A DIFFERENT CULTURE
Introduction
Different cultures have a unique view on counseling, and hence, there is need to have a
culturally based counseling intervention. The selected population is Zambian Africans. Africans
are known for group solidarity and intergenerational legacy of family relationships (Chiboola, &
Munsaka, 2018). For instance, the Afrocentric worldview has high respect for the role of the
elderly both in families and the community. The interview with the leader on the view about
counseling shows that counseling is understood mainly from the perspective of instructions and
mentorship based on historical experiences. Some common counseling practice includes
marriage counseling, pastoral, among others. From the standpoint of this population, counseling
issues include mostly marital disputes, witchcraft, and financial problems. Counseling is
multicultural, and according to Sodi et al., (2010), there is significant potential for developing the
innovative approaches to marital therapy within this population. HIV counseling also has
considerable potential within this population. However, some barriers, such as stigma and
discrimination, hinder people within the community to seek counseling services. The Zambia
African community shows that counseling is multicultural since they have unique views on
counseling based on the Afrocentric views, drawing reference from traditional counseling for
marital advice, group guidance, and instructions from the elderly.
