Nigeria is a West African country located between Benin, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.
Its coastal region to the south lies on the Gulf of the Atlantic Ocean. It was named after River
Niger by Flora Shaw (a British journalist) in 1890. It obtained independence in 1960 after
resistance to stop British colonialists who were using local chiefs to govern the native citizens
(Indirect rule). It is composed of 36 federal states. The country is headed by a president elected
by voters. The population is approximately 186 million with the country being ranked position
seven worldwide. Nigeria is made up of 250 ethnic groups with different cultures and languages
though they all speak English.
It is a third world country with mixed economic activities ranging from tourism, mining,
transportation, communication industries, finance, and agriculture. Their economic status is
ranked best in Sub Africa with gross domestic capital growth of 0.8% according to the 2017
World Bank report. Their economic stability is supported by their ability to supply entire Africa
with oil from Delta Basin. Their ever-growing tourism industry attracts the attention of the whole
world and income from this sector is estimated at 3,000 million USD per year. The federal
government has been tasked with the organization of Eyo and Calabar festivals to appreciate
their cultural diversity. The tourists find celebrations unique and amazing. Nigeria is also
recognized for its Nollywood films which is the source of income for most of the youths. The
movies reflect their lifestyle (Nolte, 2016). There has been revolution and mass production in
this film sector and this has forced some actors to merge with Ghanaians.
Nigerian ministry of external affairs formulated a foreign affairs policy to create a good
relationship with industrialized African countries, Soviet unions, and the European economic

society to promote their investments. Their diversity in religion determined the type of policies
they came up with for different counties. They related well with Israel and other Arabic countries
because of their Islamic faith but border disputes disrupted its relationship with Chad and
Cameroon. Its bad relationship with Ghana resulted from its plan to deport illegal migrants.
Nigeria has been supporting the growth of African countries by providing learning opportunities,
allowing its professionals to provide technical support and also help in peacekeeping missions.
The country is battling major challenges of the high unemployment rate, corruption,
human trafficking, civil war, poor health care, and tribalism. High population and poor
governance have been attributed to those problems in most of the reports. The emergence of
illegal militant groups such as Boko Haram is suspected to have resulted from religion and
political differences. These criminal groups have kidnapped and violated the rights of over 4,000
students among them 276 girls from Chibok high school (Bilyaminu, Iya, & Purokayo, 2017).
Nigeria has grown to be a home of human trafficking in recent decades. Besides, they have been
kidnapping both the genders whereby they use males as the front line in wars. Their leaders then
take the females to sire children whom they later train as militants.
Human trafficking refers to the criminal act of moving people across international
borders. Youths and women are the main targets in this crime, around 800,000-4,000,000 people
are shipped from Nigeria to European countri...
