If a health care center has a poor survey or quality rating, is this the single most determining factor in selecting a health care center for a loved one? What other factors may outweigh the regulatory component?

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Care Poor survey and quality rating of a health care is not the only determining factor when selecting a health care for a loved one. Distance from home, costs of treatment among others should also be put into consideration.

Most people simply go for the closest facility. However, before making this decision it's important that careful research is done. Some facilities offer more appropriate healthcare than others and thus are better. Unfortunately, some facilities consistently violate the state standards thus subjecting their patient residents to really poor care. One should then conduct their own research before settling on a health facility.

The number of complaints that the health care has received in the recent past is also a huge factor to consider. Whereas ratings and survey may show competence of the staff and general management, there could be underlying factors that get overlooked and that have made previous patients to complain.

Another factor to consider is the ratio of nurses to that of the patients that are being treated. The ratings could be good, but the service could be poor when the nurses are overwhelmed by the number of patients at the facility.

A factor to consider when choosing a facility for a loved one is how well treatment is done. What are the qualifications of the doctors there? Can they perform even the most complex of surgeries? If they are not able to treat the condition of the loved one, then the facility is not suitable for them.

Also, the care after the treatment should be considered as well. Do the doctors check on the patients often? Are the nurses friendly? Is the atmosphere serene and relaxing? These may get overlooked by surveys and while treatment could be termed as being impeccable, the after-treatment care could be ghoulish. This and other factors should be considered when we are choosing a health care facility for loved ones.
