Leadership definition is an advanced way of working together with people in an
institution in order to achieve a certain task. (Lawrence, 2015) It can also be stated as a process
where a person influences a group of people to achieve specific goals. Basing my arguments to
private and public schools leadership, where the findings are private sectors leadership is more
task-oriented and people-oriented, leadership is less oriented and people oriented in public
schools. The private institution's leadership is running the institution applying Laissez Fair
leadership style. There is much difference in the two leadership environments based on barrier to
effective leadership in the two environments which are: lacking of proper preparation of
principalship, lacking of funds, inadequate facilities and resources, lack of quality teachers,
lacking support for principals and staff in the school, systematic issues and policies in the school
and the significant factors within the geographical location of the school.
The internal factors were the major hindrances for good leadership in both institutions.
The private institution is having a better leadership system compared to public institutions. The
barriers of effective leadership are stated as:
Inadequate preparation for the principal's job impacted negatively to their poor
management and organization of the schools. The principals were not fully prepared for their
demand in the profession. The principals had a demand to acquire adequate training to handle the
demand of a leader. (Lawrence, 2015)
Another barrier to good leadership is poor strategic planning where principals are not
responsible to run the strategic planning of the school with other teachers. (Lawrence, 2015) It is
explained that it was the main aims of their principal training workshop which was canceled in

2007 to tabulate strategic plans for their schools. This was attributed to the barrier of effective
leadership skills as this task is directly attached to effective leadership.
The quality of teachers’ links up the quality of learning by the students. (Lawrence, 2015)
It is clearly stated that the teachers lack the expertise to deliver knowledge to students. The
principals noted that the newly qualified inductees were inexperienced. This has resulted greatly
to the schools and puts the burden on the schools and consequently affects the principals as the
leaders in this institution to provide non-standard training. This barrier where teachers lack
teaching expertise threatens the effectiveness of delivering knowledge to the students learning.
This problem affects internally school leadership.
Lacking financial support has been an external factor to the barrier of leadership.
(Lawrence, 2015) The lack of funding to run school programs has become a major barrier to
leadership. These issues have impeded the principal’s efforts to effectively lead the schools. It is
believed that in order to achieve and perform excellently.
Lack of parental support has been another barrier to good leadership in schools.
(Lawrence, 2015) The community support is an important group for developing a good
environment to help and reinforcement of the school's mission, vision for success. Lack of
parental support leads to lack of potential to effectively lead and manage the school. More
problems are experienced when the community fails to ...
