Description

For this paper, you will be exploring an event (or series of events) that caused you to

reevaluate your stance on a particular belief/bias/position. The goal of the paper is

two-fold: to detail your beginning and ending positions, as well as describing and

analyzing the event that caused you to change your mind. Why was this event

significant? Why does this shift in belief matter? What were the consequences? Think of

“Shooting Dad” by Sarah Vowell as possible model for this essay.

The ideas that you will be exploring in this paper should be of major importance; a

change in major, for example, rather than what color sweater you planned to wear

today. Other topics people have successfully discussed have been relationship or

location changes, religious conversions, and “what I want to be when I grow up.” Note:

You may NOT write about any of the following topics: abortion, euthanasia, the death

penalty, drug legalization, or gun control.

The proportions of this paper are important; spend as much time talking about the

event(s) that caused the shift as you do the before and after. In other words, if you

spend a page telling what you used to believe, and a page telling what you believe

now, then you should have at least two pages discussing the event that caused to you

shift your postion.

Length: 5-7 pages (1400-2000 words)

Final Thoughts:

A good rule of proportions is a ½-page introduction, 1 page on the initial position, 2-3

pages of the event(s) that shifted your perspective, and 1½ pages on the ending

position and conclusion (in which you ponder the significance of this shift).

One possible component of your paper may be to describe both the pro and the con

of a given topic. If you cite any outside sources, you MUST put them in MLA format (see

the textbook for specific details).

This paper involves a discussion of opposing viewpoints. Remember to critique the

ideas, not the idea-holder. You can say “The idea that the earth is flat is not logical,”

but you cannot say, “If you believe the earth is flat you are a big fat stupid moron.”

Also, remember that this is not a forum for converting your colleagues to your position

A New Position on Homosexuality
Introduction
One of the issues that I have been finding controversial is sexual orientation. From my
early years, I grew knowing that only opposite-sex relationships were only relationships which
existed and that those who talked about same-sex relationships were solely speculating on an issue
that never existed. However, changes have taken places so fast in society such as same-sex
relationships are becoming common in society. I find this issue significant as it touches revolves
around a social aspect that has remained controversial in many societal settings. Having being
brought up in a Christian family, I was made to believe that same-sex relationship was one of the
most unacceptable things in all societies. It was so much condemned such that it appeared that
even the government was supposed to ban it completely. It was later in our family that my stepbrother grew up to become attracted to other boys only (Henry 2015). It is because of this that I
wanted to understand this issue better and how it could happen. In this paper, a discussion of how
this event changed my perspective about gay men in society.
Significance of Understanding the Position
In the first, I considered gay people to be suffering from a severe mental disorder that
would make them feel more comfortable in having sexual relationships with members of the same

sex. It was during a family event that our brother came home with another man claiming to be his
date during the event. My stepmother was skeptical about the issue to the extent of telling him to
find another place to live because she could not condone with such behavior. From that day, I
spend a couple of days around my step-brother purposely to identify any other form of
abnormalities that were associated with his sexual orientation. However, it was surprising that he
led a normal life, which made me start seeing gay people as just normal people. Before I could not
believe that I could live, share meals and other facilities with a gay man, but now that a brother
had become what we hated as a family, we had to cope with it. This happened so fast that I found...
