Oppression of women Thesis statement: educating women on their rights and how to fight for those rights when infringed is the best way to bring an end to the perpetual scourge of oppression on women that has been profound. Introduction First Section Kate Chopin's short story, 'The story of an hour' shows us how women are oppressed and trapped in relationships that cause nothing but misery which is demonstrated by how the character Louise Mallard feels happy and relieved when she receives news of the death of her husband. Second Section Kate Chopin faced a lot of oppression before her paper was published where she had to change her storyline and have her character, Louise Mallard before her work got published since people viewed the character as a selfish monster if she lived at the end of the story. Third Section The point at which Louise Mallard in Kate Chopin's story celebrates the news of the death of her husband shows us the desire women have of the emancipation from the oppression from their husband's atrocities even if it means the death of their husbands. Introduction The short stories, 'The Story of an Hour' by Kate Chopin and 'The Yellow Wallpaper' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman were written at the end of the 19th Century, and they speak about the oppression of women, the longing of independence and the actions to get undertaken against the abuse. The ideas in the two short stories contributed a great deal in setting the ball rolling towards ending the oppression of women by educating them on what to do. First Section Kate Chopin's short story, 'The story of an hour' shows us how women are oppressed and trapped in relationships that cause nothing but misery which is demonstrated by how the character Louise Mallard feels happy and relieved when she receives news of the death of her husband. The rest cure in 'The yellow wallpaper' represents the oppression women go through in life, which should come to an end. When the woman in 'The yellow wallpaper' story destroys the wallpaper and starts crawling on the floor, it represents the joy and freedom that comes with breaking away from the chains of oppression on women. OPPRESSION OF WOMEN 3 Second Section Kate Chopin faced a lot of oppression before her paper was published where she had to change her storyline and have her character, Louise Mallard before her work got published since people viewed the character as a selfish monster if she lived at the end of the story. The author of 'The yellow wallpaper' faced a lot of criticism for her work with many people believing that she had written the paper purposely for her doctor to stop using the rest cure treatment method in mentally ill patients; of which she was one. Third Section The point at which Louise Mallard in Kate Chopin's story celebrates the news of the death of her husband shows us the desire women have of the emancipation from the oppression from their husband's atrocities even if it means the death of their husbands. When Louise Mallard came downstairs and saw her husband still alive she collapsed and died since she knew too well that the oppression would continue to her, she rather dies than go through all that misery once more. In the other short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' the author uses the illustration of a woman who runs mad when she imagines freeing a woman from a yellow wallpaper to represent the protest against professional, medical and societal oppression women have gone through in their lives. The point at which she destroys the yellow page shows us that for women to be free of the oppression, they must stand up and do something; not just staying sad and complaining without doing an act that will pave the way for them to be free from the oppression. OPPRESSION OF WOMEN 4 Conclusion The two stories that are 'The Story of an Hour' and 'The Yellow Wallpaper' speak of how women trapped in bondage that is designed by themselves due to the ignorance of their rights as well as ways of channeling their grievances and end them to start leading a happy life. The characters in the two stories would not have gone through the trouble they went through if they were educated on their rights. We all have the responsibilities of helping women understand their rights and the channels to put an end to their oppression. Comment Summary Page 2 1. Nice thesis! Make sure it comes last in your introduction.

Introduction
Maya Angelou once said that “each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing
it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.” I couldn't agree any less with her
on this. Women have been oppressed over the centuries by men and society. Men have been the
superior being in society and women the inferior beings. Many cultures in the whole world have
held women with low dignity as compared to men. For example, some cultures won't accept
women to hold public positions, and others regard them as just child bearers. It is true that many
societies also judge women hushely even when their accomplice were their male counterparts.
The role of women has been to take orders from men and do anything they are instructed to do.
The two short stories, “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by
Charlotte Perkin Gilman respectively illustrate the hardships women underwent in order to
overcome the oppression of during that time. In order to fight oppression in this century,
educating women on their rights and how to fight for those rights when infringed is the best way
to bring an end to the perpetual scourge of oppression on women that has been profound.
