ANALYSIS OF THE FILM “DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES”
The film “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” is a film that highlights the
struggles of middle school kids as it revolves around the life of the main character, Gregory
Heffley. Gregory is Wimpy and troublesome although most of his troubles are initiated by his
older brother Rodrick Heffley. The film looks at the boys’ life at home, at school, the
mischief that happens with middle school kids and the kind of friendships they create. The
film represents certain institutions and individuals in a specific manner that helps develop the
story as told throughout the film (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, 2011).
Since the story revolves around the life of middle school kids, teachers have played a
part in the film to develop the plot. Teachers nurture kids in school and impart knowledge,
but how they do it is what determines how the kids respond to them. One of Greg’s new
teachers at school is Mr. Daybrick. Mr. Daybrick immediately dislikes Gregory because he is
related to Rodrick. Since Rodrick is a troublesome and mischievous boy, Mr. Daybrick
assumes that by being his brother, Gregory will also be a bad character just like his brother.
The teacher orders him to sit in the first row so that he is close to him for monitoring. The
representation in this scenario is that teachers make blanket condemnations and profile kids
on flimsy grounds that do not necessarily reflect the kids’ character. Putting Gregory in front
where he can monitor him is a testament that teachers can pick on children and make their
lessons uncomfortable for reasons that are not any solid (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick
Rules, 2011).
The focus on parents in the film is much more on the parents of Gregory as the main
character. Gregory’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Heffley, and they are struggling to create
harmony in their family by trying to get Gregory and Rodrick get along. In a bid to make
them bond, Susan comes up with the “Mom Bucks” method to try and help the kids bond.
However, it doesn’t work because Rodrick cheats the system. Susan forbids the kids from
