Description

Select one of the following topics to discuss in a well-developed, coherent, and thoughtful essay of at least 800 words. Be sure to focus carefully on the topic, and remember that these are formal essays: they must have an appropriate, original title; contain an introduction, body, and conclusion; have a clear, explicit, assertive, objectively worded thesis statement (thesis statements must be underlined).

Essays must contain quotations from your sources, and these references should be used to support your assertions about the text and be properly documented (utilizing MLA-Style Citations for documentation).

Select one of the following topics:

OPTION 1: Select two poems that are both about the same subject matter: Nature, Art, Love, Sex, Age, Death or Mourning, War, Race, Gender. Compare and contrast the way the two treat the same theme. Your analysis should establish a clear connection between the two poems, beyond merely “They both discuss love” or “both refer to death”; rather, the connection should be based on similarities in situation, structure, language, imagery, theme, et cetera.

OPTION 2: Select a poem and a song that treats the same subject matter: Nature, Art, Love, Sex, Age, Death or Mourning, War, Race, Gender, and so on, and compare and/or contrast the way the two treat the same theme. As above, your analysis should establish a clear connection between the two works, beyond merely “They both discuss love” or “both refer to death”; rather, the connection should be based on similarities in situation, structure, language, imagery, et cetera.

Introduction

A well-composed poem should be able to convey the intended message to a particular
audience. At times poems may exhibit different styles of writing as well as similarities in the
central theme discussed, the structure, language and imagery. Various forms of poem
composition may thus affect the quality and effectiveness of the poem in delivering the intended
message. "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and "Nothing Twice" by Wislawa Szymborska
are brilliant poems composed by two different authors while sharing the message of the aspects
of life. I compare the two pieces of work to get an insight into these two remarkable pieces of
poetry. In this article, I submit that despite the similarities in the way the two poems approach
the aspect of decision making in life, each poem presents the first idea differently due to the
unique nature of the composition of each.

Theme

The two poems exhibit the central theme of decision making in life. In the poem by Frost,
the poem presents the narrative of a person in a dilemma and is not sure which road he should
follow. The poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost depicts two ways covered with
