improved competitiveness for Tencent China. An investment in training and development is
implemented only after an assessment of problems that has an impact on the organization in
terms of competencies and productivity. Tencent is a company that provides Internet-based
services through the delivery of internet solutions to billions of its clients (Li & Adamas (Law
Firm). 2005). The training process is based on job requirements and targeted business objectives.
For Tencent Company, the main objective is to train employees and develop skills necessary for
increasing the labor output while also reducing the barriers associated with productivity. Amid
its rapid expansion especially in 2006 and 2010, there was an increase in employee headcount
but a shortage of managerial talent (Holloman 2013). The managers who didn’t have the
necessary skills and experience were given a task that they couldn’t handle. This had a negative
impact on team efficiency which prompted the company to develop professional and personal
development for its potential pool of managers. As part of its strategic objectives, the company
through its human resource department had to establish the Tencent Academy to ensure that the
training opportunities were provided to its pool of employees. One program that was developed
was the Feilong program that sought to accelerate the development of reserve middle managers.
