Description

Activity 9: Students with disabilities are given little opportunity to express their preferences, make their own choices, or take responsibility for their actions. This teaches some of them to become dependent on the adults in their lives, and it develops learned helplessness in others. What is learned helplessness? How can teachers help students with disabilities overcome this dependence on others and this feeling of helplessness? (FESE 6.2c)

Learned helplessness

Naturally, every person is different from everyone else in some ways. The differences
can be positive or negative and have implications on how people behave. When this difference
come in a way that makes that person dependent on other people since they are not as capable as
the rest are, they tend to have an aversive stimulus. A person realizing of their lesser capabilities
leads to some of them felling and behaving helplessly. The learning of this situations and
behaving in the said way is referred to as learned helplessness. Though not all the people that are
less capable end up feeling this way, some adapt to this situation and figure out their strengths,
they eventually make use of them and end up feeling equally important as the rest of the well
capable people.
